Unleashing the Entrepreneurial Spirit

As an entrepreneur, on a journey toward achieving the level of entrepreneurial success I envision. Throughout my path, I’ve encountered numerous challenges that fueled my passion to not only navigate them but also inspire and assist fellow entrepreneurs in embracing the true spirit of entrepreneurship.

Spirit of Entrepreneurship

But what exactly is this spirit of entrepreneurship? It is a profound belief in one’s capacity to create, provide value, and contribute to others. This value can manifest in the form of services or products, however, it goes beyond the mere capability to encompass one’s identity. The entrepreneurial spirit embodies qualities such as resoluteness, adaptability, resourcefulness, and a profound desire to solve problems. It is the ability to take what one loves and share it with the world. Entrepreneurship, while tied to economic principles, is fundamentally about delivering value—a commitment that extends beyond running one’s own business. It is an inherent function of leveraging personal values, talents, and skills to enhance productivity, offer solutions, and problem-solve for any entity, whether self-founded or not.

Are you entrepreneurial?

If you ever chose to do one thing in your life that creates an income for you by your own terms and conditions, what would that one thing be? If you never received a job offer, or an opportunity to study further, but had to pursue something that you are inherently talented or good at doing, what would that thing be? If you had a choice of choosing your industry, your job title, your roles and responsibilities, and your key performance indicators to be measured by, what would you capture?

Meet Bongi

Consider Bongi, a young mother of three from a small South African town. Due to historical circumstances, she’s uneducated and unemployable. In a quest for opportunities, she, like many South Africans, turns to entrepreneurship, particularly in the informal sector. These individuals embody the true spirit of entrepreneurship. Using limited resources to establish businesses, they bravely start food businesses, spaza shops, hair salons, and daycare centers, showcasing innovation and a drive for economic inclusion. These are all self-taught pioneers creating, innovating, and driving economic inclusion.

The Learning Game

The question therefore arises, to support Bongi to move beyond survivalist entrepreneurship to a sustainable business, can the art of business be learned, especially for those navigating the informal sector? Entrepreneurship is not reserved for the few, it’s a skill set that can be developed and harnessed. Entrepreneurship should be seen as a skill to be mastered, support must be provided to informal business owners to level up. So can entrepreneurship be learned, can the spirit of entrepreneurship be harnessed? Absolutely, yes, it’s about acquiring critical skills, seeking mentorship, building on processes and systems, and staying resilient and resolute. For informal business owners, this is a much-needed intervention to unlocking sustained profitable business success.
